I have been wanting to learn how to us Lightwave. I have a copy of Lightwave 8 lying around my house. Also I need to learn Maya too, which is probably somewhere behind my desk.

One of the best free modeling programs out there is Wings 3D.

Simple to use, and does the job. Perfect for any budding modeler out there.

I've personally used Wings, Gmax, Anim8or, 3DS Max 5, and Silo. For straight modeling, Silo is my favorite. Not free but pretty cheap (around $109). No animation capabilities in that app though, but the modeling features are well worth it.

now, Swift 3D v4.5 ROCKS.

it makes very good animated 3d models and is brilliant for vectorised animation.

I use true space because I work for a 3d chat room company. But when It comes to my own games I use my own modeler. (Dont ask me about it because it is still in alpha!)
