403 Forbidden Error (and 404 Not Found)

I'm trying to test a cakephp site. It works fine on my local test server. On my free server here, I get 403 and 404 errors on the cake pages, but regular pages work fine. From what I've read here, it looks like a problem with either permissions or with the .htaccess files (required by cake). So far, nothing I've tried has helped.

Any suggestions?

Make sure the permissions for files are 644 and for directories are 755

Check any .htaccess files for rewrites. Also any allow/deny directives.

Post the error messages you get. They can be cryptic, but they are usually very helpful

Post the contents of any/all .htaccess files.
