Putting some things in the "Free Hosting" forum just isn't working.

Two out of three of your webmail options have been broken for months and nothing is getting done. Threads get closed or slide down to oblivion.

http://x10hosting.com/forums/free-hosting/122426-webmail.html

Email notification on cron jobs is not working and nobody seems to be able to give an answer as to if it is temporary or intentional. Having this feature helps debugging cron jobs a lot. cPanel shows how you can 'turn it off' if you don't want the emails.

Lastly, by blocking ports used by SMTP, x10 has made using Google Apps for outgoing mail impossible. People have said that it worked before the Dallas-->Chicago migration. Did they forget to open the ports? Is this a conscious decision? Lots of questions, but no answers.

Found another problem nobody in authority wants to help with...

http://x10hosting.com/forums/free-hosting/123521-ssl-not-working-starka.html

SSL seems broken on Chopin and Lotus too.

These aren't "Why was I suspended for breaking the TOS which I agreed to?" or "Why won't my InDeX.HtmL show up?" or "I signed up for hosting 34 seconds ago, where is my site?" or "I know there are 200 posts asking this, but is Lotus down?" type questions.

These affect a lot of users but seem to get lost in the shuffle.

Well I guess the idea for a "Needs Fixing" Forum is a no go.

According to Staff, they already know about these problems that, in some cases, have been going on for months. Yet the do not fix them. They do not even respond to posts about them.

I understand the current problems are paramount, but has x10 been in crisis mode for months?

I don't know why I post this. Not like it is going to do any good. Just accept the fact that some things will not get fixed or explained.

I'll look at these once we finish the pending transfers. I'll leave this open for now.

I know that Staff is in the middle of another migration and probably cannot address these items at the moment, but I have somethings to add.

1. I have been told through a third party that the email notifications were intentionally disabled because far too many were being sent out (a 5 min cron job sends out 288 emails a day times X accounts adds up ). Fair enough. It would have been nice if those people who did not want/need the notifications had used the hint on the cPanel Cron Job page to silence them.

http://x10hosting.com/forums/free-hosting/126246-crons-not-working-what-ever-i-do.html#post703223

is how I log/catch errors/email notify in cron jobs

2. It seems that Apache runs as 'nobody' and when it runs a Perl script (cgi-bin), it does not change the UID to that of the site owner, it remains 'nobody' , while PHP scripts run with a UID of the site owner.

Problem 1 is that when you try to write to a file, the file and/or directory has to be 'world' write enabled so 'nobody' can write/create it. Isn't that a bit of a security hole?

Problem 2 is that sendmail does not seem to work in that set up. A script that sends mail fine as a cron job (runs as the owner of the file) does not send mail run from the web.

Update/bump

Seems like the proper ports are open on Boru to allow a PHP script to contact smtp.gmail.com and send mail via Google Apps. So we don't have to burden x10hosting's mailserver and can avoid some spam folders.

I still have this thread on my todo list... once everything is settled in and support caught up we can look into everything.
