Hi

i’m a noobie at all this, so apologies in advance for the stupid questions.....

I have an account and WP site set up here with myname.x10host.com. All OK so far.

I’ve now bought a domain and want to move the site I have created to show at mydomain.com and also to have an email address of me@mydomain.com. In easy steps how do I do this?

Also, and this is a bigger ask, how do I set up to receive and send my me@mydomain.com from my GMail account?

Many many thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

Phil

Step 1: Set the nameservers of the domain to ns1.x10hosting.com and ns2.x10hosting.com

Step 2: Login to DirectAdmin and add the domain as a new domain under "Account Manager->Domain Setup".

Step 3: Copy all wordpress files from "domains/<x10provided_domain>/public_html" to "domains/<your_custom_domain>/public_html"

Step 4: using your x10provided domain, loginto wordpress admin panel and under settings change "WordPress Address (URL)" and "Site Address (URL)" to reflect the details for your custom domain. Once these are saved, you will only be able to login using the new domain. Verify that it works with the new domain before moving on.

Step 5(optional): In DirectAdmin under "Account Manager->Site Redirection" put a redirect from the x10 provided domain to the custom domain.

As for e-mail, under "E-mail Manager->E-mail Accounts" create the desired e-mail address.

The gmail part, I can't help with though, as I do not have my personal email accounts through gmail, I use a local mail client.

I want to be able to collect me@mydomain.com in my Gmail

ok, in Gmail there is an option to add another email address.
from your inbox on gmail website, click the tool gear on the right,
click "Accounts and Import" scroll down to "Check mail from other accounts:"

I think that would allow you to enter the email address for me@mydomain.com.

and i think you can use gmail's "Send mail as:" option to send email
as me@mydomain.com.

Note: i have not tried it but from what i can see it sounds like that
is an option for what you want. i do have gmail as well
so i was able to find those settings.

Step 3: Copy all wordpress files from "domains/<x10provided_domain>/public_html" to "domains/<your_custom_domain>/public_html"
Hi Anna

How exactly do I do this? I've followed your instructions as below......

System Info & Files/File Manager and then selected '"domains/<x10provided_domain>/public_html"' I've clicked on 'copy files' but it won't allow me to chnage 'domains/<x10provided_domain>/'.

Is it possible/simpler simply to 'rename' "<x10provided_domain>/" to 'mydomain.com' on the account management page?

Thanks

Phil

Step 3, 4 and 5 will not be possible until you have added the custom domain.

Renaming the folder is not an option, doing so would break the x10provided domain

copy1.PNG

Location 1, is your x10 provided domain, while in that you mark all files/folders and click "clipboard".
copy2.PNG

Navigate to location 2 (your custom domain), in the lower right corner of the filemanager window you will find the following dropdown, chose copy files.
copy3.PNG

I would say yes, copy those to the 2nd public_html folder.
so you have like public_html/wp-admin/

note: no guarantee wordpress will work just by copying the files.
(if they somehow got installed in the other directory instead)

Which is why the next step after copying was to login to admin using the x10 provided domain to change the settings. That's what will make it work from the new location.

Hi Anna

Ok I got the new site working as per your instructions above (thank you) BUT I had to delete the index.html file from public_html to get the site to work.

Can I now delete my x10 domain?

Also, if I had simply renamed my x10 domain with mydomain.com, in the domain management, would that have worked? (my x10 site was a dummy version of the mydomain.com site)

Also, what happens if I change the default from x10 to mydomain.com?

You can remove the x10 domain, though it is of no harm to leave it either.

Just renaming the domain would have left you with a small issue with logging into wordpress as it would have tried to rewrite the address to the domain it was installed under. While that also would have been possible to sort out it would have involved some file editing.

Step 5(optional): In DirectAdmin under "Account Manager->Site Redirection" put a redirect from the x10 provided domain to the custom domain.
Hi Anna

I have done this.

My old site (x10) has been indexed by Google and appears in searches. When I click on the indexed link (the x10 site) it redirects to the new site (mydomain.com) however the re-direct is missing a / so goes to a 'cannot be found' page (eg x10host.com/page1 redirects to mydomain.compage1).

How can I fix this?

Thanks

Fixed it for you by editing (actually adding new with same parameters does edit the existing one) the redirect and adding the missing / on your domain.
