I currently use a program from Blueyonder called PCguard. It comes with my internet package, but the problem is, when it starts up with the computer. It takes aaaaages to load up and start running etc.

I was wondering if there are any other FREE, Antivirus/antispyware etc programs that will not make my computer really slow on startup?

thanks,
mike

Grisoft's AVG v7 Free Edition, and Microsoft's Windows Defender Beta 2

With those two progs, my P4 2.6 GHz 1 GB RAM comp starts up in <30 seconds

With lousy Norton it used to take up to 50 seconds..

Ewido is the best anti-spyware in my opinion. Works fast, has loads of features and excelent detection.

As for antivirus, AVG without question.

Well depending on your userabilities,

Intro:
Malware comes in all forms, but you can prevent spyware from entering.
Anti - malware like ewido is good when u require to scan your entire system

Malware/Spyware: Solutions

_http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

The above links belong to spywareblaster,

Its a type of special software which prevents spyware from entering, it uses zero system resources and only need to load once every updates which comes in every 2 to 4 weeks.

Therefore you do not need any anti-malware protection unless you deal with installers everyday and there is no point in running so many anti-malware at the same time.( trust one anti-malware you think your safe if you really want to have one either adaware or spybots depend on you again (user preferences)

If the above spywareblaster still not enough get a host protection

_http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

This is to protect your host by checking restricted websites and others which they think should be protected on.

Antivirus:
AVG is good

If you need a heavier version you may want to try

Avast! which is good because of its free 1 year licensed and allowing home user to continuously renew after 1 year.

Basically all the method is there, but please bear in mind, what are you really looking for in security terms which is such a wide topic and lots of security methods out there.

I hope this helps

Alright here we go...
Nod32 for Antivirus - $60
Zone Alarm Anti-Spyware Edition - $20
Windows Defender Beta 2 - Free
Spybot - Search and Destroy - Free
System Mechanic 6 - $10
TuneUp Utilities 2006 - $10

Most of those you can get free if you know where to look ;). If you use all those together along with a good hardware firewall your set from most mediocre script kiddys. Anything above that and it's no use even bothering to spend the money to stop them.

If you want total security, don't go on the Internet at all.
But, since this is obviously not a solution, I recommend the #1 most useful tool of all time:

Education

If a person with no computer knowledge manages to go on your computer, he can pretty much mess it up beyond belief. Probably most people here would not go randomly clicking on email attachments that say "FREE GIFT!" (I hope so) but would his/her friends/family/relatives? The simple answer is to teach them not to. One can use MSIE with the latest Windows updates behind a router and not get anything. In fact, most "viruses" do not exploit vulnerabilities, they exploit people's minds or general lack of computer knowledge. It's called "social engineering".

Back to the topic: F-Secure comes with my Internet provider. It's fast, takes 1/3 of Norton's memory, and is one of the first to scan rootkits (too complicated to explain in this post, which has already gotten very long). NOD32 is also very light.
