I have a new host, one that is paid, and I want to backup my current site so I can transfer it.
Anyone know how?

you login with an ftp client, and download everything in the public_html folder.
if you have a mysql database, open your cpanel, and find phpmyadmin. In there you should beable to dump your databases.

on the new host, just upload the files and use there mysql client to import the databsae

You can select your public_html folder through cPanel's File Manager and click on Compress to make an archive of all your website's files. Download this file, then upload it into your new hosting account and extract it.

There used to be a backup system built into cPanel that would allow you to download your site contents, as well as a complete backup which would back up everything of your account. That was removed due to server resource usage. The easiest way to back things up is to use FTP as well as phpMyAdmin/your PHP software to grab your files.
