I enabled apache mod_rewrite for my Joomla site. Did everything right, but nothing happened. Why?

rename htaccess.txt file to .htaccess to make things work, If there is no htaccess.txt file then download the fresh joomla package to your PC, Extract it and upload this file to your joomal dir

I did rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess, still no result. Then (with apache on) I tried enabling SEF URL's, which caused the entire site (besided the homepage) to turn to 404's. Then I turned of SEF and left Apache on, and the site is fine again. But the URL's are the same as in the beginning.

Paste your .htaccess contents here so that we can find out if something's wrong.

Add RewriteBase / to the top of your htaccess file.

Here is my .htaccess file. I bolded/italicized the line that xav told me to add.

Move the "RewriteBase /" below the "RewriteEngine On" and it should solve the issue. Let me know if it works.

*sigh* Followed your instructions and immediately received a 500 Internal Sever Error.

I noticed only one thing: should (on line 2) htaccess.txt be .htaccess? I bolded it.
My .htaccess looks like this:
