blocking access to server folders

iv seen on websites if you look go on the directoy where content is stored i.e pictures, flash, when you try and view this directory it it sometimes comes up ,

You don't have permission to access /blahblahblah on this server.

is there anyway to do that on these servers, i have tried password protecting my directories to stop content theft but this doesnt allow any of my content to be viewed because it needs password to view.

To do that login into your cpanel, goto Index manager, select the directory you want to protect, on the next page select No indexing.

or you could create a .htaccess file that only allows server admins to access it.
