basically, what i want to know is, can it be done? i know in older windows operating systems (windows 98, for example), there was an option to boot in ms-dos mode. windows operating systems since then (such as XP) use "command prompt", not "ms-dos" (not that i see much of a difference, personally), but from what i can tell, there is no "boot in command prompt" option. so, can it be done, and if so, how?

thanks for help.

Question I guess would be why are you trying to boot to command prompt, and is it something that can be done via Recovery Console (which is essentially a command prompt, although it might have different commands and such)?

Wait for POST, before Windows XP loading screen comes up, press F8, Safe mode with Command Prompt? Is that what you want?

Oh, don't worry about it. It's not a problem really :)

OK, I've helped both of you out by Rep'ing Smith6612 for you. As a bonus, I think my Rep gives him more points than yours! I know he's earned it, Smith6612 helps out quite a lot round here :)

By the way, have you tried using the System Configuration Utility? Depending on what you're trying to do, it can be quite useful at times.

To open it in WinXP, click Start Menu, Run..., type in "msconfig", & click OK.

Have a look round in there & you will find loads of ways of selecting & controlling what runs at Start Up. It's quite advanced so use its Help menu or Google for info on what it all does.
