no matter what I set the permissions to it asked for username and password. What am I doing wrong? I have checked with both the /www and /public_html directories.

After I orginally posted this Apache went down. Now to wait for it to come back up.

When the server came back up all works. Must have been as issue with that ever caused it to go down. Sorry about the unneeded post. If only the server had shown down at the time.
