hello,

i've tried several times to back up and export our database using phpmyadmin and the process hangs. it worked about a month ago or so, but no longer works. i'm mystified, because the database isn't very big at all.

here is some supplemental information:

- user: kronus
- domain: www.athkronus.com
- database name: kronus_bb
- server: mysql-starka.x10hosting.com

please let me know as soon as possible how to resolve this issue.

thanks!

When exporting the database did you selected the compression. That reduces the time. And In the starting it may takes time. But After some time it will ask for ope/save option.

Did you checked any errors or logs are creating problem. If you are using any CMS or something. They will create error messages in mysql itself. So The mysql size increases.

Check that.

hi gsonline,

thanks for your quick reply. :)

yes, i selected compression [gzip] first. the process hangs forever.
then i selected without compression. the process still hangs forever.
i'm exporting the same way i always have -- as sql, export all tables, no options, no compatibility mode. then i tick 'save as file' with compression as noted above [either on or off].

i would love to look at an error log -- where are these kept? there is no option in the phpmysql window to show any kind of error log, and trying to open other windows [such as 'new phpmyadmin window' or 'operations'] also waits forever without getting anything in the new window. it seems to me that the server is simply too overloaded to function correctly...

thanks for any ideas you might have!

What server are you on? I've noticed starka hanging a few times today (right now for example), and it was also going down occasionally while I was working on my site., which could be related. Just keep trying, or alternatively take a break and try again tomorrow.

As an aside, gzip compression won't speed up the backup, it will simply reduce the size of the file you get sent, meaning less transfer time, but it still requires the additional step of compression at the server side.

thanks for the note, ah-blabla. yes, i'm on starka.

ok, i'll keep trying. the frustrating thing is, it's been like this for about 2 weeks now... i've had to abort 3x in the last 2 weeks cuz it just takes so long. it's strange, cuz the db isn't really all that big.

i'll try again... *sigh*
