 This one really has me scratching my head. I just went and bought an internal memory card reader, I put it in and connected it to the USB interface on the motherboard (had to disconnect front usb to do so :frown:) plugged everything back in and now windows refuses to boot, all I get is a blinking "_". checking the bios shows the new interface (available as a boot device) however it is last in the boot order. unplugging the card reader allows me to start the computer with no problems at all.

wondered If anyone had any ideas that might help...

Maybe make sure there is no memory stick in it -- just in case it's a memory stick format issue.
Since it is usb, can you boot, then plug in?
Maybe in bios there is a "legacy mode" setting.

I will look into "legacy mode" as I hadn't actually thought of it. It's fresh out of the packet so I would like to think there wasn't a memory card in it :p I will also try plugging in once windows has started, only reason I haven't done that already is that is so cramped inside the case.

Thanks for the fast reply!

Does your BIOS allow you to completely remove a device from the boot list? If you can do this, do so. Set your Hard Disk and Optical Drive as the only boot-able devices. Everything else as disabled. As per USB Legacy Mode, it's only for devices not originally made to run in USB or are otherwise not USB aware being used in operating systems older than Windows XP. If this has a new reader I'm positive that it will not have any effect.

disabling legacy usb in the bios has worked and allowed me to boot normally.

I agree with you smith6612 in that removing legacy support shouldn't be a logical option for something that is 'new'..however I guess this is what I get for purchasing cheap peripherals from no-body brands.

All that aside, thank you for helping me with my problem!
