I'm trying to install Word Press on my subdomain but I keep getting an error: "The MySQL database could not be selected." That's pretty cryptic but I guessed that the database name being used on the setup form is wrong so I tried changing it twice; this failed each time on the same error. Is the install expecting a database with the name on the form to already exist or is it going to create that database for me?

I checked and PhpMyAdmin says the MySQL client version is 4.1.22 and the server version is 5.1.65-rel14.0. The current Word Press version being installed by Softaculous is 3.4.2. Are all of those compatible with one another?

I'm curious to know what needs to be done to get Word Press to install correctly.

For what it's worth, I just tried two other blogs from the Softaculous list and both installations failed on the same error: "The MySQL database could not be selected."

What am I doing wrong?

I just did a 'test' WordPress install - made no change to the Softaculous 'install page' - just clicked on [ Install ]
it made the database and database user
I had no errors

What - if any errors do you receive when trying to make a 'test' database in cPanel's [ MySQL Database Wizard ] ?

Very simple.

Check to see how many MySQL databases you already have. If you are at the max, you will get that error from Softaculous since you cannot create another.

What is the maximum number of databases permitted in MySQL on the X10 servers? I believe I have 3 databases, all of them very small.

Hi descalzo, I had 3 databases but now it's been reduced to 2 :)

Anyway back to the topic. The name of the database is important don't misspell it.
Try removing and uninstalling the 2"test" WordPress and try again. So even it you had 2 database used up, you will free them up when you uninstall.

I recommend WordPress.com if you want to leave the hassle of maintaining WordPress. And it's FREE too.

I've confirmed that descalzo is correct; I already have 3 databases, although one is the information_schema which I think got generated automatically by MySQL. Can I let Word Press use one of the existing databases and just add its own tables to that database without harming tables already in that databases? Or do I have to drop one of my databases, create a new empty one, and then tell Word Press to use that database?

If you are using Softaculous, when you install it, change the default value of the database name to one you already have (if you have username_foo already, the name you use is foo )

Make sure you use table prefixes. I would use phpMyAdmin to examine the database you are using to make sure that the table prefix you chose will not conflict (table prefixes turn a table "users" into "wp_users").

BE VERY CAREFUL. If you use Softaculous to remove a script make sure it does not remove the database. It will remove the entire database, not just the WordPress tables. You will have to remove the tables in the database by hand.
