I can't help but wonder whether this action was based on political correctness, i.e. how America is now pictured as an "aggressor" and that a hero representing America would be "offensive" to people who hate America. What's your opinion?
I think it is based on political correctness, and I believe it has gone too far. This character was a great symbol of American patriotism.. I'm not suprised that he has been killed off in this day where patriotism is apparently a bad thing.
Here's a wiki entry regarding this:
"In March, 2007, as part of the aftermath of Marvel Comics' cross-over series Civil War, Captain America was apparently killed in Captain America vol 5 #25. Series writer Ed Brubaker plans to use this to write about the meaning of the character in modern times.
"What I found is that all the really hard-core left-wing fans want Cap to be standing out on and giving speeches on the streetcorner against the Bush administration, and all the really right-wing [fans] all want him to be over in the streets of Baghdad, punching out Saddam."[10]
Marvel Entertainment Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said, however, that a Captain America comeback wasn't impossible. The character's death came as a blow to co-creator Joe Simon, who said 'It's a hell of a time for him to go. We really need him now.'"
