I have this old Compaq (model #: SR2050NX) and I need to change the BIOS splash screen (or remove it). I am having a hard time because it is so old and hard to customize. It does not have any changing utilities, or quick boot option. Does anyone know how I can do this?

I am already aware of the dangers involved, especially if it involves flashing the BIOS, but thats why it is an old computer... please don't try to warn me again.

This can be done depending on the BIOS that you have. The BIOS uses 640x480 images, obviously which aren't very big in file size. You can create a bootable CD/floppy/USB disk with an image you want to use for an image. If you know the hardware the old PC has, Google it to see if the BIOS can be modified with a tool. Take note that this isn't the easiest of things to do, and of course you always run the risk of a FUBAR.

I was hoping someone on the forums would know of a utility (and hopefully how to use it). I can't seem to find one for Compaq, only Intel and other more customizable boards. Compaq has no interest in allowing users to 'debrand' their computers.

I found this additional information in the msinfo32 utility:

BIOS Version/Date: American Megatrends Inc. 3.17, 7/26/2006
SMBIOS Version: 2.4

I have contacted Compaq as well as American Megatrends for support, and I am awaiting their response.

I remember the oldest AMIBIOS I've seen before. The BIOS was pretty advanced for it's time since it was able to be controlled via a mouse and had a GUI similar to that of Windows 3.1.

But in terms of flashing the BIOS with a new logo, IBM and Lenovo I know have given people the ability to change the logos. Flashing an AMIBIOS should work in roughly the same way.

Knowing Compaq though, they have most likely locked down that BIOS to an extent, so in that case, I normally tell people to try to find an unlocked BIOS image to have flashed to the board and work from there. Don't take my word for this though, as every PC is different so to speak. You can use a program from 1998 called TweakBIOS though which might come in handy.

Well, it ended in Compaq not helping, and AMI saying that I should ask Compaq. The utility Smith gave me was for a different motherboard. I don't mind taking risks with this machine, but I draw the line at using a utility that does not even claim to work on my system. So, if anyone finds a utility that works for my system, please tell me. Otherwise, I think it cannot be done.
