Changing from Joomla to Wordpress

I have a site created with Joomla. I now want to use Wordpress but with new and updated content but using the same domain name as the Joomla one. Do I uninstall the Joomla site or can I park it somehow so that users only access the site created with Wordpress

If your Joomla site is installed at http://username.x1host.com or http://mycooldomain123.com then you can install WordPress to a subdirectory such as http://username.x1host.com/blog or http://mycooldomain123.com/wordpress . After you have setup the WordPress site you can then point the mycooldomain123.com the subdirectory so that your WordPress site will appear at http://mycooldomain123.com/

I don't see how this proposal can work because the X10 host always points to http://username.x1host.com no matter what happens within wordpress. In other words, what stops the joomla site being selected in preference to the wordpress one?

Well if you installed Joomla to http://username.x1host.com/ and then installed WordPress to http://username.x1host.com/ , the index.php of WordPress would overwrite the index.php of Joomla (I'm 99% sure Joomla uses index.php) and http://username.x1host.com/ would display the output of the index.php file.
