What do you prefer?
Custom Built or Already Built pc's?

I prefer Custom built pc's as you can choose to your best agreements, as when buying a already built one you can't get it always extact to your liking.

But already built pc's normanly have a high percentage of working, As custom built pc parts aren't always compatible with each other. EG. the am2 chipset and its memory had alot of problems.

I agree, custom built is the only way to go.

Custom as in building a PC yourself? Or custom as in going online to the PC manufacturer, and customizing all the options?

Either way, I'd definitely pick custom. Store bought computers tend to suck.. a lot. They dish out monitors and gigantic hard drives, and up the price several hundred.. customizing a PC with nice RAM, processor, and not too extravagant hard drive and bam you save tons of money

I mean building yourself. I don't think I have ever bought a computer. For the last 10 years I have built every computer I have ever used for the internet.

Well i made the mistake of buying a base unit with no keyboard and monitor just the case ,amd processor,512mb ddr ram, dvd recorder, gigabyte motherboard with on board audio and geforce 6200 graphics then ended up ripping it a part nicking the proccesor, dvd drive, hard drive, buying a new case designed for overclocking another sata 80gig hard drive, new ecs kn1 sli extreme motherboard, 2x gainward golden sample nvidia 6600gt/256mb pci express graphics cards, 2 gig overclocking ram, new 600w power suply and some fans and buit the pc im on now, id never built one before in my life and i was so suprised at how easy it was,...**** lol my mom could do it  why i didnt just do that in the first place is beyond me but like i said i never buit one before hell the base unit i got was the first pc i'd had in years and once i got it i got the hole computer craze thing and went mad

so yeah i say custom cos even with buying the other base unit it was still much cheaper than any ready made pc you could buy from a shop with the same spec, so if you dont wanna get ripped off custom is the only way, and its so much better knowing that you made your pc

Yeah not very well known over here but i read a review about how good the Kn1 Sli extreme was and that the overclocking test they done on it was up there with boards that cost twice the price and i was after a good overclocking sli motherboard so i got one and wow the wernt joking for eg with my gigabyte motherboard my athlon 64 3000+(venice core) toped out at 1.9ghz from the stock 1.8ghz and the Ecs breased past that all the way to my target of 2.8ghz the max you can get almost from a 3000+ a massive 1 ghz overclock and has been fine there for the last 2 years with a max temp of 45c on uprated air cooling, id recommend them to anyone.

Custom. Custom, custom, custom.

I hand built both pc's that are in working order right now, and for the heck of it I checked online for pricing information...

Some of the ugliest prices ever, this pc supposedly woulda cost me $1000 to get from dell. Built for about $400 (cut some corners though, pre-existing case, pre-existing power supply, and a video card I got from a friend for half of it's retail price, he didn't check to make sure it'd work in his pc first). Had I actually bought all new parts, about $600.

$400's enough to buy a psp or a ds (possibly both, not familiar with both of their prices right now).

The other pc? I decided not to post the pricing information since I couldn't find a pc with the same specs (probably a good thing, the video card is a piece of royal bull cookies). The closest model was $799, built it for $500.

Granted these arent powerhouses, but $400 for labor and shipping? I'll take my chances (for laughs: http://www.x-arcade.com/htm/cabinet.shtml - that costs $299 to ship to my door. And it's like 5 times as tall as my pc, and easily 5 times as wide )

Cusom Pc's always have been the best, You can do so much more.
Whats the point in spending loads for a company bulit pc instead of buying a custom built pc which saves you a hell alot of money, also you learn alot in the process.

like the average american, i'm too lazy to put real effort into such things. if i had time on my hands and even the slightest inkling to learn, i'd be up for self built pcs. getting exactly what you want at a good price is great, but it takes a lot of researching and having some connections to get even better deals.

i don't normally buy out of the store, but i do go to seller sites and customize my order there. i am probably getting overpriced, but for a novice at such things, i'm faily content with my ignorance. at least if it breaks, I have someone to blame. if a pc i built didn't work right, that would just crush my ego. ^^

hmmm I would like to make my own custom built Pc.
But i'm from Argentina, i'm 18 yerars old, and my dad puts the money, so we bought a good "Bought pc" and then i added a good video card.

I would like to have my custom built pc, but i'll have to wait to have my own money, and to know a little more about computers :D

Like a lot of things, if you want it done right, you might as well do it yourself.

One the one hand, Custom built PCs can save you money (thousands of £ in the high end sometimes) and you get to have the satisfaction of building it yourself. You can also get exactly the configuration you want. and use higher quality parts than a pre-built pc.

On the other hand, Effort. You have to research the cheapest places for the components you want, wait for them to be delivered, build it together. install everything (which can take ages). etc. When you could just spend a bit more and have it ALL done for you. Right up to having data from an old pc transferred to your new one. And warrenties. If it goes wrong you usually have someone to fall back on, and get them to fix it. With a custom built PC you don't have the luxury.

If you have the time to research and build your own pc you definately should. you can make massive savings. But the average joe is either too busy or can't be bothered.

If you are a techie, it is cheaper to build a computer. I bought the cheapest Dell Desktop (Dimension 1100) and added on from there. I had to buy a new motherboard cause they didn't even have AGP or Pci-Express on the motherboard...
Another issue, the new motherboard didn't even fit properly, but I managed to work around that with a drill :)

The current specs are:
2.8 Ghz Celeron D (stock)
512 Mb ram (got my second 256 today, I know, it's crap...)
256 Mb Radeon 9550

And i'm actually in the process of installing Windows Vista on it, so we'll see how that goes...
