Custom Error Pages dont work and never have?

I have problems with Custom Error Pages - i never needed it but now i do,

I create a 404 and all of the others via cPanel but it doesnt redirect to those files when there is an error - it just displays the x10hosting stuff and a load of ads.

Help, tutorial please?

Read that. cPanel often doesn't add the lines to the htaccess file correctly and you need to do it yourself.
