database issues and connection problems

I'm using Joomla! and phpbb, and a lot of times the site will either time out or have a database error. This has to be because of server I think. What's wrong?

here are some error messages:

Error loading Modules:Lost connection to MySQL server during query SQL=SELECT m.*, am.params as adv_params FROM jos_modules as m LEFT JOIN jos_advancedmodules as am ON am.moduleid = m.id WHERE m.published = 1 AND m.access <= 2 AND m.client_id = 0 ORDER BY m.ordering, m.id

Error: could not sellect to the Joomla database
