i had this problem for a while now and unable to figure out how to fix it. awhile back i put some disc in a drive i used to have in my PC and it ate the disc and stopped working all together. well i got another cd drive and it dont show up in "my computer" (im using XP). i first thought that the drive was bad.. but then i installed a dvd drive as well from a computer that it worked on before and still it does not show up in my computer. what could be the problem?

the disc drives open and close and everything just dont show up in my computer...

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Device Manager (something like that) and try to find the cd drive. If it doesn't show up or it has the yellow thing then you probably need to update the drivers for it.

Honestly, I have no clue.. but, shooting in the dark, do you have it connected properly? Specifically the IDE cable?

no lol, the Y-power connector and IDE cables only fit one way... even SATA cables do...

How many watts of power supply do you have? Your problem may be caused by low power ;)

i guess you have just uninstalled a burning software ( like Nero ) ?

If so , even if not so , see this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270008 :

1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
NOTE: If you are getting a code 39 message, it may be that additional third-party filter drivers were added to UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in addition to Adaptec filter drivers. In that case, you may try to remove the non-Adaptec filter drivers first, leaving the Easy Creator filters in place to see if the Code 39 goes away. If you still receive an error code 39, 32, or 31 message, remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely in the preceding key.

2. Restart your computer.

Did you check in the BIOS menu if the drives show up? If they do show up then it is a problem with your operating system. If they don't show up, click the detect hardware option in the BIOS setup. Even after that if it doesn't show up, it might be a problem with your hardware.

Don't forget to completely disconnect the old broken drive, then check the jumper on the back of the drive. You have 3 positions for it to go,
1 - Master, when it is the only device on the cable
2 - Slave, when another device uses the cable ie your HDD
3 - Cable Select, only used if the PC's internal config needs it.

See here for more info - http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/installing_cd_recorder.htm works the same way for a DVD ReWriter as well.
