In a recent announcement, Corey said that the disk space was doubled and is now 1024 MB for all free accounts. I do not think my disk space was doubled. My account panel says I only have 500 MB of disk space. My username is "metroman" and my website address is http://metroman.pcriot.com.

You should check in your CPanel not in account panel.
got http://metroman.pcriot.com:2082 and login using your cpanel username and password.
and check what it is saying about the space on left side bar. If it is still 500MB then post back here.
