We have our "own domain" (via google domains) that we want to point to a wordpress site on x10. But, our first priority is to not mess up email routing. Right now, we have all email to our .com address routed to a single gmail account. I was hoping I could just change the A record in the Google domain DNS to 198.91.81.13. But am getting server error. Is there a way to keep the mx records in tact on google, but still point to the x10 web/wordpress site? I guess I'm trying to avoid the x10 nameservers because I'm worried about an email outage. Second question, if I do not want a sitename.x10.mx at all, but only want sitename.com, is it ok to just "rename" sitename.x10.mx in the control panel (under domain management) and have that as my default domain? Sorry, I'm no good at anything backend (obviously).

It should be enough to set the IP as an A record, as long as the domain is added to the account as well.

Rename is an option that you indeed can use, that replaces the old (x10.mx) domain with the new one as long as it is a valid and registered domain that you have control of (I understand you do have that, just pointing it out for anyone else that may read the thread).

Looking at your account, it appears you have used the rename option and successfully gotten your own domain up and running.
