DVD RW not working :(

My DVD player on laptop seems to read CD's ok, but when it wont play DVD's... I updated the firmware, it worked once but then it went back to n ot working with DVD's again...

Anybody help?

I know most CD players won't play CD-RWs, so maybe the same applies to DVD players, but it also depends on how knew the DVD player is. I don't know much about DVD burning but with CD burning only recently (past year or two) have CD players been made with the capability of playing RWs.

If your laptop is older then 2 years, then it most likely will not play DVD RW's

it is a dvd drive, it used to read them. and now randomly doesnt. i think the model name iiiis... QSI DVDRW SDW 041

Do you have Nero CD/DVD burning utilities.

Are you sure you updated the firmware correctly ? Is it the latest version from the vendor ?

the 1st time i updated the firmware it read the DVD once, and then didnt work again. No i dont have Nero thingy. In only really wanna read the disk so i can get some stuff and install some progs that are on it...

Make sure it's not the DVD, try it in another DVD drive

Make sure that you check the DVD RW compatibilities.

As in DVD+RW and DVD-RW.

it isnt the disks, ive tried both + a - DVD disks and neither work...

How many watt is your power supply? And your CPU.

I think it time you cleaned the DVD lence. You can use a DVD/CD ROM Cleaning CD to clean it. BUt sometime CD/DVD-ROM's say bye bye (break) for no reason. I think your one may be showing sign's of dieing. If the cleaning doesn't help if I were you I would say .

Also what does these things about the CPU Power, Opeating system has to do here? May be you'll did understand because he said that it was working and it does work randomly.

THe Software or CPU power has nothing to do though as software doesn't control the CD detection system of the ROM.

Some media doesnt always work either. You might go out and buy a cd made by Sony and it works good but go out and buy a cd made by memorex and it wont work at all. I have seen this before it might not be your problem but you never know.
