Install Joomla 1.5 (2/3)

The installation can not be completed:

- You cannot install more than one script in the root directory of a domain.

Click on the browser's Back button to fix reported errors.

Do you have something else installed on "/" or "public_html" ?

I had the same issue and didn't find a solution, so I too would like to hear from anyone who knows how to install to the public_html directory (if it is indeed possible).

A workaround I thought of (and tested), is to create a sub-directory under pubic_html (e.g public_html/cms/) for the installation. Then have a small index.html in public_html that quickly redirects the browser to the Joomla installation. Not as nice as installing direct to public_html of course.

Try enabling hidden files in your FTP app or in the File manager and see if you see any files then. If you don't then you can install to a sub-folder and then use .htaccess to redirect all traffic to the root directory to the sub-folder, plus the users address bar would still show you were in the root directory.

If you used Fantastico or Softaculous to install a script, they put information about the install in your home directory,
/home/cPanelUsername
not in
/home/cPanelUsername/public_html
They are in folders .fantasticodata and .softaculous
If you remove the installation by hand (files and database), that info is still there so the installer might think the script is still installed in public_html.

Hmmm... .htaccess sounds like an even better workaround than a index.html for redirection. I'll have to try that. Thanks!
