i think mybb is the best free forum script and SMF, phpbb is also good

If you are just starting If you want to integrate with a blog kind of CMS,use Joomla + Kunena
If you want software alone and already have a wordpress blog,you can use mybb or SMF.Both have their advantages and are opensource.
X10 loves opensource.
