Hey Everyone,

If you were looking at a free trial for a VPS service, is there anything specifically you would want to see with the trial? Any services preinstalled? What would you be looking for?

Any input on this from the community would be great!

Thanks.

Hello,
I am already a VPS user (from x10hosting only). Can I get a VPS trial for one day. There is some problem with my vps and i have to reinstall the OS to solve it and I can't afford downtime.

sorry if I am going off topic.

I think an image with most web services preinstalled and running would do fine as that is what most people do with a vps. The only thing i can think of that would be nice is a free panel like ispconfig, webmin or kloxo(yes, its already there) for the people new to vps hosting.

I prefer trials to be exactly the same as paid solutions, but time-limited. That way, I know exactly what I'm going to get if I do pay for it, and not end up thinking I'll get something I won't (or vice versa). I do understand that some people will want to spend their limited time playing with the system and not just setting it up, though; maybe there should be a couple different images available, similarly to how there are multiple OS images available post-purchase?

I'd certainly benefit most from a trial that allowed you to see how it would perform with my specific setup. So as was mentioned, that would require an identical setup. Mainly to get an idea of what the service provides, not what the trial provides. :)

One suggestion I can see is limiting the "damage" that could be done from a trial VPS. I can see a few problems if someone were to get a trial VPS, even for an hour, and then install an email server and send out a few thousand spam emails - that might not go over the best :p

I'm not saying limit what the VPS itself is capable of, but perhaps in the case of emails only allowing them to be sent to a specific email address set up for the trial VPS user on our network? At least this way they'd be able to confirm emails are indeed working, but there'd be no risk of spamming publicly either.

I'm guessing you've probably already thought on that front though. I know we'd still have to have freedom with the trials, but there should still be something in place to help mitigate any damage that could be caused -from- the VPS (spamming, DoS, etc.)

And trials should probably be kept in a "bubble". Accessible by a x10 URL and only able to interact with itself. Nothing can leave etc. that could do any damage.

On another note; I sent an enquiry via the form on the x10VPS website. If someone could answer my questions that would be great. :)

This thread is aimed at features of a trial VPS - Not how to prevent abuse of the trial. That kind of stuff is under control already. Feel free to let us know any more suggestions!

Sorry, went a bit off-topic.

Would it be possible to have any "images" already configured for common setups to speed up the process? For example with apache and MySQL etc. already installed.

I think the trial should include the full SolusVM panel and allow them to reload the vps with other images, do backups, etc. just so they can see how and how well the backend system works as well (having a trial version of cPanel/WHM available might be beneficial as well).

The best trial, is to have all premium features for a limited time. Then, anyone can find out what he/she would get exactly.

I thought I'd broaden my knowledge by browsing thru these threads but have become increasingly frustrated with the use of acronyms, more particularly, on the zero tolerance page where some of the expressions are way over my head.

Here, I don't know what VPS stands for. Perhaps it would have been helpful to explain this in the 'sticky' thread so that us newbie’s could become better-informed.

VPS stands for virtual private server, meaning that you take one physical server and spit it into multiple "virtual" servers that operate independently of each other so the client has total control of their environment.

I agree that a trial should be a fully featured limited time type of deal.
Maybe even offer a free trial including the cpanel build or something so they can see the performance differences, but also see that the learning curve doesn't have to be extreme in order to run a vps?

We're working on this for the new sites, it's a bit tricky due to the abuse people can cause in a short amount of time on a VPS. We'll figure it out though.

A ready made site put up telling you what has been installed would be nice. so apache & php would be a good idea.
