FTP in Mac OSX

Is there any way to connect to my server via ftp in the "connect to server" link in the tools menu? I have been successful in connecting actually, but it tells me that it is read only, and that I can't upload/change any files. Does anyone know why I wouldn't be able to upload files via this feature in the Mac OS?

Are you using the compsci username to connect?
If you are, it is probably a restriction of the operating system.

yes i am using the compsci username to login. i can view all my files, but it gives me a message saying the drive is read only when i try to edit any files
