Gzip compression levels

What exactly does this mean to me as I can set it from 0-9?

My guess is that the higher the compression, the faster the page loads BUT the higher the compression the more cpu is used.

and for lower gzip compression I think that it means slower load time compared to the same page with high compression. Am I right or am I wrong?

On vbulliten forums they are recommending the level 1 compression.

High Compression on a loaded server would in fact make pages take longer to load. If anything, if you leave compression to a minimum, just as long as the person's internet connection isn't terribly slow, the pages should load up just as fast. My forum at the moment isn't using GZip compression since I have nothing to worry about in terms of bandwidth usage.
