yes. People get off work and school for one week (im in america though -_-)
There is also a lot of celebrations, including a show on TV with lot's of actors performing skits and other stuff

I went to fin's house and watched a bit of that... Would've helped if I spoke Chinese

But the acrobatics and things were really amazing, didn't go so much for the costumes though. Some of those were really strange 0.o

Apparently the Chinese New Year is also called the Spring Festival.
