I would appreciate some help with this as I've installed Wordpress on a previous x10hosting site (which has now been deleted) so I'm annoyed with myself as to why I cannot do it again.

I have uploaded the files to public_html/wordpress/ but when I go to public_html/wordpress/install.php I get the following:

> [
wordpress-logo.png
logo]

ERROR: %s'), $error); ?>

checked="checked" />
'.__('Already Installed').''.__('You appear to have already installed WordPress. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first.').'
');} switch($step) { case 0: case 1: // in case people are directly linking to this display_header(); ?> ReadMe documentation at your leisure. Otherwise, just fill in the information below and you’ll be on your way to using the most extendable and powerful personal publishing platform in the world.'), '../readme.html'); ?>
error) ) wp_die($wpdb->error->get_error_message()); display_header(); // Fill in the data we gathered $weblog_title = isset($_POST['weblog_title']) ? stripslashes($_POST['weblog_title']) : ''; $admin_email = isset($_POST['admin_email']) ? stripslashes($_POST['admin_email']) : ''; $public = isset($_POST['blog_public']) ? (int) $_POST['blog_public'] : 0; // check e-mail address $error = false; if (empty($admin_email)) { // TODO: poka-yoke display_setup_form( __('you must provide an e-mail address.') ); $error = true; } else if (!is_email($admin_email)) { // TODO: poka-yoke display_setup_form( __('that isn’t a valid e-mail address. E-mail addresses look like: username@example.com') ); $error = true; } if ( $error === false ) { $wpdb->show_errors(); $result = wp_install($weblog_title, 'admin', $admin_email, $public); extract($result, EXTR_SKIP); ?>

...instead of the install page I have seen before.
From comparing this to the source code I am guessing that it's a PHP problem, is that correct?
I considered using Fantastico instead but could not get it to install to public_html/wordpress .
Any advice would be great so thank you in advance.

If you're trying to start fresh, I recommend re-downloading the source from wordpress.org and uploading it or using Fantasico/Softalicious.

No you don't understand, it's saying that because that's part of the markup as in if the page loaded correctly and there was an existing Wordpress install there it would display that message. The PHP is being ignored and therefore anything after PHP tags (including the tags themselves) is being written to the screen whereas normally the code would do something; you can see this especially in the text boxes which of course should be blank so you can enter your database details but instead have the unrecognised PHP code in them.

Can someone tell me about installing Wordpress through Fantastico as I do not know where it sticks the files. Does it matter if they cannot be installed in public_html ? I'm losing patience with a manual install and so might opt to go through this route instead. Cheers.

If the only thing in your website is your blog, I recommend clearing your public_html folder completely and using Fantastico to install a clean copy of Wordpress.

You can find Fantastico in your cPanel under the "Software/Services" tab.

Problem is solved, the file-browsing software I was using was not showing the files. Everything works now, thanks.

It's good that your problem is solved. For future reference, I recommend using the File Manager provided through cPanel, as it will always show an accurate representation of the files stored on your hosting account.
