I'm a newbie at this and any help is much appreciated. Why is it that, when I try to open my php script file(for ipb install), I get a open or save dialog... When I try to open it through my site, I just get a blank window...

You should upgrade your PHP version to Intermediate.
Changing your PHP version is a quick and easy task. Login to the account management panel ( http://www.x10hosting.com/login ) with your forum username and password. On the left hand side near the bottom is a section called 'PHP version'. Choose the version you require from the three radio buttons (which is most likely intermediate), and type an explanation of why you need your PHP version changing. If you're choosing the advanced configuration, this should be very detailed.

Click the 'Continue Process' button to submit your request. Once your request has been submitted, you'll need to wait up to six hours for it to be approved and processed by a member of staff.
