hi i have installed a website but i get 404 page

when i either go to my website address or to my admin panel i get a 404 page why?

do you have a file with name of [ index.xxx ] in you folder [ public_html ] ?
xxx == "php" or "html"
and "Index" is not the same as "index"

Do you mean that you get a 404 even when you login to your admin panel?
