How do I connect to my server through a secure FTP option?

Hello. I have been connecting to my website through plain ftp to upload files, now, however that I am going to be making serious use of my websites, I am looking to connect through any of the secure options. I mainly use fireftp, since I'm on linux, and cannot, however connect through any other security option other than none! I have also tried filezilla, and through their trial version a number of other ftp clients, plus visual studio, but I couldn't connect with a security method selected.
Is there something I am missing on how to connect securely to the website through FTP? Or should I contact the website administrators for them to try and fix it? Are you also having the same issue?
