If you find somebody you want to hire, ask them how much they would like to be paid.
If it is too much, say "I can only give you _____ instead of ______."

Whilst I know this is little different I've just left school and been going for job interviewers. Both on the application form and at the interview they have asked how much do I think I should get an hour / what's the going rate.
Ask them - chances are they'll say something a little higher to 'normal' then offer them a little less but what they would still be happy with (if you can afford that).

The idea behind that question is that if you're modest and say something low, they'll only pay you that. And if you're ridiculously high, they'll tell you to f*** off! If you're close they'll say something about how you've obviously done your research...

Definitely. I've looked into what the minimum wage is (£3.40 for Under 18's, at a 'normal' job) and answered at around the £5 mark. One company offered £4.96 an hour, where as someone else I knew who has just started there only gets £4.80.
