There are three ways of making money on the web: sell stuff people want to buy (whether that's goods or services, which includes useful web applications); publish stuff that people will want to pay to read; or publish stuff that a lot of people will want to read and sell advertising (or use an advertising service like AdSense).

All three of those things have something in common -- your site needs to be a place where people want to go. The internet isn't a magical place where the rules of commerce are somehow different (except that it's a bit easier to set up a scam). You will get money if you provide value and promote what you do. The main difference between "meat space" and the internet is that the phone book (search engines like Google and Bing) will move you to the front of the book, so to speak, if your site has useful content and you give them a bit of help finding things (like by submitting a sitemap). If you're not offering anything worth finding, it won't get found. And if you are selling stuff, well, the real-world rules still apply: you have to spend money to make money, whether that's spending actual currency on advertising or building "sweat equity" by shamelessly promoting your site (without actually spamming forums and so forth).

If you're hoping that all you need to do is create a web site and wait for the money to roll in, it's time to take a serious second look at your business plan.
