Hi. If I'm not mistaken, you normally add gadgets by right clicking on the side bar and then selecting "Add Gadgets" or something like that. Then you get this window with all available gadgets which can then be pulled on the sidebar using drag&drop.

If you've installed the gadget (usually comes in a .gadget file), by double clicking on the icon, it should appear in the window I mentioned before. However, I have experienced several cases where this doesn't work for some reason - for example when I tried to install the accuweather.com gadget - it just didn't show up. So far I haven't found a solution for this problem. Perhaps that's the same problem you've got there.

you have to either download it with the add gadget tool "R-Click sidebar > Add Gadgets > Get more gadgets online" or you have to manually install it in the gadget file "%userprofile%\appdata\local\microsoft\windows sidebar\gadgets"

if it still wont work it might be a badly made gadget and you should try contacting the maker for help.

here are some links for your perusal:

The side bar gadgets are added by clicking the top left most "+".

Read the how to on Microsofts page, they are made using html they claim. The bloody thing only chows memory and has no real use other than showing you how much memory it has chowed. There is one gadget I was that is cool. It is a live feed from nasa tv, shame the person who made it didnt think to allow you to get other live feeds. Everywhere I looked when using the side bar, people where complaining about transparency issues and gadgets being to small.

My advice loose the side bar(and vista if you can) and rather find a propper solution for the situation you are in.
eg:
if you need a calculator, use windows built in one.
if you need a calender, use Outllook.
and so on...
