I was wondering if you could create an Image Board such as 4Chan on x10Hosting (non-premium). Would that be acceptable? Would I need to get premium?

EDIT: Consider this post dead, leaving it here so it makes sense with the rest of the thread's flow, but Bryon explained it on IRC - image board isn't considered much different than a forum. By file hosting, they meant photobucket style sites. Original post follows

From my glance over the TOS I don't see anything that says it -wouldnt- be allowed, save for this:

File Storage: Accounts are not to be used for file storage, your account will be permenantly suspended if found to be breaking this rule. Downloads are only allowed on your x10Hosting account if they have to do directly with your website. e.g. you developed custom software and are selling it or giving it away. Accounts may not be used for mirrors, game file hosting, or any other type of file hosting not specified here.

Which is all a 4chan/imageboard is - storing files (images).

The other major drawback is resource usage if it gets popular, or warez/porn if someone goes and posts an image like that before you get to remove it - your account would be suspended without warning if it's ever found to be violating the TOS, so it's a bit unsafe to be running an image board.

EDIT: Oh, and as for paid/premium: x10Hosting does not allow the use of it's services for illegal activities. This includes hosting of copyrighted material, nulled scripts, or anything that is considered illegal under US law. A suspension leading up to termination will be imposed for a breach of these terms. While we strive to accommodate all types of sites our shared hosting may not be used for the following:

* File or Image Hosting Sites

It's listed right on paid, so my bet is it violates Free's File Hosting section as well. You'd have to get a VPS.

Only if there is no illegal stuff, no porn, no nudity, no copyright infringement and all of the other stuff 4chan has that breaks the x10 ToS ;)

We're debating the definition on IRC right now actually, vigge's saying it's legit while me and one other are calling it file hosting. I'm still inclined to believe that it -is- file hosting and if the mod/admin reviewing the account feels the same way...well, it's not good.

Yes I do understand. Well would posting a tutorial on how to run an image board be illegal at all? Would that be a problem. I would think it is but i don't know. Thank you for your help. I asked first because I knew that it would not be allowed. I might think about getting the VPS once I get some extra cash. Thank you.

Well it is hosting files but I assume you guys are debating mostly if it would be mostly used to host files such as photobucket or flickr right?
Edit:
If it is a legitimate website that follows the ToS it is okay.

So basically if there is no copyright infringing photos or other things?

On the first one yeah; that was my understanding at least. I thought image board was essentially image magick, the x10 stance on it is that it's more like a forum.

As for the second one, no copyright infringement, no porn, etc. The usual no-no's :)

In that case I guess I will post a tutorial on how to run an image board but I won't run one myself. I don't want my account to be suspended. So my understanding of this is that there is more leniency with a VPN (sp?) account?

Sorry, this is going off subject, but I'd like to add that I thought somewhere it says that files are okay, as long as they are linked to your site, not just in a directory.

It did, the part I was debating was the definition of file hosting:

The part of the TOS we're discussing said:
File Storage: Accounts are not to be used for file storage, your account will be permenantly suspended if found to be breaking this rule. Downloads are only allowed on your x10Hosting account if they have to do directly with your website. e.g. you developed custom software and are selling it or giving it away. Accounts may not be used for mirrors, game file hosting, or any other type of file hosting not specified here.

I bolded the two key parts; I was under the impression an image board counted as image hosting, which is a type of file hosting and thus violated TOS.

Anyways we solved that part, it's that first bolded part you're mentioning though, it's more that they have to do with the site and it's contents. You can't just decide to dump a 1gb zip of all your wallpapers onto your site which is about programming and has nothing to do with wallpaper downloads :)

Suppose so :)

That will be the cause of the debate then-now I see what you mean, lol. I'm sure you could tell genuine from file hosting though.

I don't know. I have skimmed through the TOS like most other users (PFFT!) the mod said that it is ok as long as none of the common no-no's are in your website.

Yeah it's in the finer print, it's basically "if it's on your account, it has to do with your website." So no hosting your home pc backups on x10 :)

Lol that is what Ubuntu One is for. Free 2gbs of back up. I save my important documents on there. 7zip every file to make more room. Thank you everyone. I guess I will make the tutorial and also add part of the TOS. Thank you everyone. Have a fun weekend.
