Internal Server Error 500

I am running a script which needs public_html to be set to chmod 777
But when I set it to 777 I get internal server error. This is really required please tell me how to resolve this error?

The permission 777 is security issue. So you can't set that.

Which script is that requires the public_html folder to be set to 777?
