Actually if you are talking about the United States, you would be meaning a Constitutional Democracy since they do not always need a constitution or bill of rights to limit governmental power as in theory the people have absolute power to decide what they want as a majority. The US does not meet the criteria of a Democracy since the people do not exercise much control at all, over what laws, politics, and direction this country is taking. The founding fathers looked at previous governments and did the best job they could creating a Constitutional Republic and electoral college because as they said in the Federalist Papers a pure Democracy cannot work.
The United States is closer to a plutocracy since powerful groups and powerful corporations manipulate policy decisions to their favor. We can vote whomever we want in but as it go’s the people pay poorly and the corporations pay much, MUCH better. It is not so hard to get a job at these companies with a comfortable salary after helping them out so many times too.
The Constitution is a document, an agreement that lays out the framework for living in a society where people have protections from historically dangerous and damaging government, which always arises when people rise into positions of power. The Constitution guarantees nothing so it is up to the people to decide how we live. Apparently, everyone is willing to give up their liberty for false security and anyone willing to do that deserves neither. In addition, as anyone who has heard Ron Paul speak knows the Founding Fathers were not interested in being the Imperial conquerors of foreign nations we have become.
I always like to see people talk about changing the constitution and doing away with the “old” stuff when we do not even follow the “old” plans anymore. There is a simple explanation; the country’s intelligence level is declining and stupid people are incapable of defending their freedom. Try this on for size: “A democracy where all the people are too ignorant to understand that they are not living in a democracy and are actually slaves with government granted privileges providing the illusion of freedom”.
So in closing, no Democracy constitutional or not is worth even the paper that the people’s opinions are written on, in my opinion of course.
