As always Microsoft has created a big hype around Vista with all stories about the ultimate windows platform OS. On other side already security flaws are showing up to counter all the security perfect OS. Also minimum RAM recommended by experts is 1 GB i.e. it is not only OS upgrade but memory upgrade also.
So question of year - Do XP user think of upgrading to Vista or better stay with XP.

It depends on the viewpoint you take. If you're going for the overall look then, yes, I believe that it may well be worth it. But with all of those fancy looks, it will definately slow down everything you do because it has to find and display those graphics. But I don't think that its worth it because it has security flaws and is possibly not completely supported and I just dont see the point of upgrading.

If you are a online gamer i recommend not doing it. I was almost going to upgrade and then saw that alot of games don't workt "yet" on vista. On the other if youplay NEW windows games they ARE compatible for winddows vista. As you can see on the logo on the game box.

Right now, it's not worth the moolah. The improvements are there, but aren't worth the cash (right now anyway).

Upgrade to Vista IF you have a good PC. Its one of those OS's that run blazingly fast on higher end PCs ( Compared to XP ) and painfully slow on lower ends.

Stability is pretty good for me, 3 months and counting w/o a single bluescreen.

The only need I see for upgrading to vista is only for gaming. I would recommend you to have more than 1GB RAM and a good graphic card if you have it, G0 all the way :D

I strongly recommend that you refrain from updating from Windows XP to Vista. Though Vista is good, but the drivers, softwares, games that are available for Vista are nowhere when compared to XP. And you would need two graphics cards increase your ram. One graphic card is for the aero features and the other is if you are a gamer. Robert Vamosi of CNET calls Vista a $200 Service Pack for XP....LOL

I would say 1 GB Ram Is not enough. You can only run small softwares. If you are doing DVD Burn Or anything to do with video editing, then you cant do other things while you do those. So you better stick with XP

From what i've read and heard about Vista, it appears more 'mass consumer' oriented to me. Basically it removes a lot of the control that people can have on certain elements (these also being the stuff prone to be the source of boot up or other problems that people may experience)

For 'power users' or people who want more control over their own computer, i believe it's generally recommended not to upgrade to vista, as XP gives, or more readily provides, better/easier control over these elements. - Since i haven't used vista yet, i can't provide which elements.

Vista is definitely worth it, if you have the specs, OR if you know how to configure your computer to maximize the performance. Using 3 Gigs of virtual memory on each of your hard drives and plugging in flash drives to count as RAM would definitely help Vista work well.

I have not yet encountered ANYTHING that does not work with vista except Paretologic Antispyware. All games I have work, all software works (assuming you have the latest version of the software).

For games, Vista also has DirectX 10, which works WONDERS for the gaming type of person. The graphics quality amazes me.

If you have a lower-end computer, you can install Windows Basic. If that still doesn't help, you can just reduce the menus to look like "windows classic", which will allow you to keep all the great things that makes programs run well on Vista, but increase the speed. Of course, I ALWAYS recommend maximizing the capabilities of your computer with better hardware, so when you do that, you can upgrade, and that's fine. It's better to cope with XP while you build up for the perfect comptuter.

Other perks of Vista: Audio mixer (to change the volume of each specific applitcation), thumbnail taskbar (see a small picture of what is minimized when scrolling over the taskbar), Halo 2 (duh), automatic driver updates (EVERYTHING I have ever attached to this computer had its drivers found by Vista's Window's Update without a problem), great look (obviously, the interface and flow of everything looks much more beautiful and smooth), faster boot time (I'm not sure if others can testify for this, but Vista starts up SO much faster for me than XP did), Windows Defender (spyware protection for those too cheap to buy other brands), and other things I can't think up at the moment.

I hope that helped =)

Overkill much? Vista runs fine for me on 2GB of RAM without swap. Firefox uses a lot of my memory, unfortunately.

I actually like Firefox because it takes less memory than Iexplorer.

Back on topic though, Vista is only worth it if you have at least 2GB of RAM, and you also would need a dual core processor. If you get a Pentium D you would probably want it to be at 3ghz a core. If you have a 2 duo, you could probably get along fine with only 2.2 or somewhere around there. If you want it for gaming, the newer games look a lot better on Vista, although the older ones tend to play better on XP.

If you just do everyday things on your computer then no, it is not worth the trouble of upgrading. Vista just takes too much power and will slow down your computer.

Well...Windows Vista has excellent design, and good security. It rocks if you install Windows LiveOne Care. Its really good.

Many people say Vista has bugs and is bad. They also say that it take up too much of the RAM. I personally never experienced these, but these claims are still wroth considering.

I use a 2gb RAM 2.0ghz Toshiba laptop...so I really dunno what problems Vista causes...But in my opinion:

Upgrade to Vista if you can

Vista makes my 512 mb ram feel like petty change! Unless you have a GB or two of RAM, dont upgrade. I am seriously thinking of downgrading back to xp.
I like it best on my fedora installation though. no matter what i do, the system doesnt freeze. Pity adobe doesnt allow photoshop to be emulated via wine, or i would have given windows the boot.

yes, if you have a powerful machine, im still with xp os, i dont have a lot of hard disk space, vista need a power video card graphic too, but i guess vista still have a lot of security problems, 15 Gb for free disk space to install vista is too much for me :(

best regards

i don't think it's worth it, from my point of view.

most of the programs available are still not vista-friendly.
i had to install this program for uni and those were using vista were the unfortunate ones cause it's not vista-compatible.

besides, the slow start up and shut down really puts me off. :x
that's what i observe from my sister's computer though.

My pc ran very sluggish on my 512 mb ram. I barely got a 3.0 user rating.

512MB of RAM is not enough for Vista (except Home Basic). Memory is cheap these days; if your other hardware is good enough for Vista, upgrade to Home Premium at least.
