Well personally, I prefer XP. Vista is just a bunch of money, for a fancier looking OS. XP works just fine. You can download all the security updates and such, so there's really no use in paying to upgrade to vista, unless you're just obsessed with better effects and graphics.

If you need an OS to do many things at once (i.e. multitasking), then Vista is for you. If you need an OS to run properly on a 64-bit processor, then Vista is for you.

If you need an OS to do anything else, then XP is for you :).

i think you should just stick to xp for now cos there are so many bugs in vista that microsoft will probably have to come up with another os or let the competetion beat then to it.

If you are looking for good visual aids and slow system, with allot of unsupported applications maybe Vista is your choice. and if you really think that the security in vista is great, let me tell you BoOoO. simply vista's security is a clone of that one found in most of Unix/Linux distribution but not to help you! its to control you, and by that i mean for example you need the assistant of Gods to at least change the MAC address of you NIC. In addition to the great similarity that the MAC OS security platform before Microsoft turned it into another commercial product, I simply couldn't find anything good about vista else a very wide range of articles shooting at MS and its new baby Vista.

I wouldn't upgrade from xp to vista, but if I was buying a high end new pc I'd most likely go for it with vista pre-installed.

No. The only two things worth upgrading to Vista for are the Readyboost function and the visual upgrades. But the visual upgrades take large amounts of RAM, and if one already has that amount, you can get similar effects by installing software like Beryl and Yahoo widgets. Vista also makes some programs and hardware unusable. Don't upgrade.

I didn't have much choice when I bought my fiance' ( and myself - we'll share ) a laptop for a late Christmas present. I have XP media editon on my PC, and I guess will tinker with Vista when it comes.

i tried vista and IMO its pretty buggy and certain things you would expect XP to run vista probably cant. plus, you'd need around 2gb of ram to run it smoothly. sure it has great eye candy and in fact its the one thing i like about vista.. you should just stick with XP. vista to me is like a upgrade to XP and XP is not dead yet and probably wont be dead for a long time... service pack 3 supposed to be released on XP around feb 2008.
