Is there any restrictions on how many images I could host on free?

Just read on another thread there is a 1gb image storage limit? I thought we had unlimited storage though?

Confused

It's about the aims in offering the service. Space is being provided for web sites, not for file sharing and so on, and the hosting provider has enough experience with Free Hosting users to determine patterns of behaviour that fit the aims of their offering. You have essentially unlimited (actually unmetered — if you start racking up terabytes of space, interfering with the service offered to other users, you''ll be reined in) space for "content" if you qualify for the upgrade from the initial restriction @peppermi noted. So you can easily exceed 1GB of images if those images are part of your site's content (such as inline images in articles) and still be in accord with the terms of service.

Galleries, on the other hand — parts of the site that are dedicated exclusively to the display of images and/or video — are limited to 1GB in total. That represents something on the order of 3000 to 5000 images that will fill an average monitor screen at very low JPEG compression (high quality). Slightly higher compression (say a 9 quality in Photoshop) will yield many more images. That is more than enough for anyone's portfolio or for casual browsing. More than that and you're really talking about file storage or image sharing/sourcing, both of which fall outside of the aims of the Free Hosting service provided.

Thank you guys for responding so quickly you are great

Very disappointed though as wanted to use the service to create a photo gallery website for my work?

What is the cheapest upgrade to allow this?

After 25 images, it's not a portfolio. After 500 images it's not a gallery anymore either, it's a storage library. If the idea is to impress, you're not going to do it with volume, but with quality. You will be judged by your worst image, not your best, so only put your best up on your site.

That said, as long as the images are your own (and you are not allowing uploads for image sharing, not hosting images for use elsewhere, and avoid anything that is illegal, obscene, hate or likely to be construed as offensive by reasonable persons), any of the Premium or VPS plans (check your disk allotment for VPS) will do the trick.
