I am using FileZilla (and used is successfully when hosting with 1&1.com) and am having lots of trouble with getting it to connect. I looked in the tutorial forum section first and got to these two places which didn't help:

http://twiki.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/AllDocumentation/CpanelDocs/FTPAccounts
http://twiki.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/AllDocumentation/CpanelDocs/FTPSessionControl

My domain (which is from godaddy) is www.thecoldone.net, which IS going to my x10 account. I try using ftp.thecoldone.net, as well as other variations I thought it could be (the server being "Chopin.x10", I tried variations of that). I also tried getting into my cpanel to work on some stuff, but whenever I try going there the browser times out or can't find it (www.thecoldone.net:2082 or even http://chopin.x10hosting.com:2082).

This just seems to giving me a lot of hassle, and all I try from the tutorials and knowledge base don't seem to help. (and when I try stuff like ftp.thecoldone.net, FileZilla times out).

For FTP, you have 2 choices: either use your server ( chopin.x10hosting.com ) as FTP server on port 21, or any of your websites address ( www.thecoldone.net ) on port 21. Do NOT add ftp before the server name.

both options (www.thecoldone.net, chopin.x10hosting.com) both result in a connection timeout.

And I can't even go to my cpanel to check things out there (by using the address they give me in my account control).

Hello,

I'm ussing filezilla, use this tutorial to setup it:
http://www.velnetsupport.co.uk/parrots/FTP/Filezilla/
Also, you don't need to remove the prefix "ftp." in the ftp address :)

You maybe get connection time out because your firewall is blocking it, you should check your firewall options and allow connection in/out for fillezilla :)

In addition, if you're ussing Win XP you must disable the Windiows Firewall too. (I'd this issue in my first connection here)

Even after disabling the firewall, it still times out on me. I get to "Connecting to 216.245.205.66:21...", and then it times out after 30 seconds or so.

so far I've tried...

ftp.thecoldone.net
www.thecoldone.net
thecoldone.net
thecoldone.x10hosting.com
ftp.thecoldone.x10hosting.com
Chopin.x10
chopin.x10hosting.com:2082
ftp.chopin.x10hosting.com:2082

I think that's it...

and again, I still can't get to my cPanel at all either, which my account says is through the URL above (chopin).

Hello,

To login in your cpanel u can use:
http://chopin.x10hosting.com:2082 or http://thecoldone.net:2082

Also bot urls work fine for me, please clean you cache, flush your DNS and try to access again, if you can't access try ussing any proxy website to check that is issue in your browser and not in our servers.

When you could see your site without proxy, try to access again to ftp service ussing:
ftp url: ftp.thecoldone.net
username: yourcpaneluser
password: samecpanel

If you couldn't connect to FTP please back and post here and we will check if our servers are bloking your IP :)

Those cpanel links still just time out for me. Though I don't know how to flush my DNS (I cleared my cache).

And again, that ftp is still not working for me, this is all just time outs.

Though I HAVE been doing this at my school... I can try again when I get home tonight.

i used to be with 1&1 and they suck nut sack.
its so easy to use x10hosting with ftp, try wise-ftp its really simple to use.
This is not the place. If you don't have something useful to add, don't add anything. This is for support, not general chit-chat on the merits/pitfalls of 1&1.

It's possible your school is blocking it for some reason... Double check you're using passive FTP, and you could also try a different client, just to make sure. You could paste the following in the address bar of Windows Explorer:

ftp://<username>:<password>@thecoldone.net/

if nobody is looking.

Also, try http://ftp.thecoldone.net port 21. The http:// is very important on some FTP clients because they append urls with ftp:// instead. If you type ftp://thecoldone.net:21 you get a blank page. If you type http://ftp.thecoldone.net:21 you get an error message (in Mozilla Firefox at least) that it doesn't understand the content (because it's FTP).

What? Trying to connect with FTP needs ftp:// ... He's using FileZilla not FireFox.

I'd guess it's your FTP client being clever and automatically substituting ftp instead of http... HTTP and FTP are the protocols... you physically can't DO FTP using HTTP, because then it's not HTTP, it's FTP! :)

I really think it was my school's network. I got home and tried both thecoldone.net:2082 in the browser AND ftp.thecoldone.net in filezilla and they both worked -_-

You can even see for yourself. I just need to fix the way the images are linked in the HTML so they show up (the structure is a little different from back at 1&1...). Now I just need to start deleting folders in there that aren't necessary so I can clean it up just a little bit.

That is very likely. At least you know it wasn't something you did wrong
