My 11-year-old sister has decided that she would like a Web site of her own. I love x10Hosting and want the Web site to be with you guys. However, because she is only eleven, and only I will be the one maintaining her Web site (as she has no experience in web design), I am unsure as to how to create a place on the Web for her.

Should I create a new x10Hosting account for her, or would it be better for me to just add a /mysisterssite directory to my own site? I thought I read, while signing up for x10Hosting, that it was against the TOS to have anyone but the account owner logging in to the account and editing files (and technically the account would be my sister's, right?).

Or, should I use something simpler for someone young and inexperienced, like Webs.com? All she wants to do is put up some stuff that she likes (like, talking about herself and such, like a bio) and maybe start some Web show thing. Would Webs be a better path for her needs?

Then I consider that Webs (as far as I know) does not give you access to files like .htaccess and you have less control over your site's appearance (they add advertisements to your site, and you are required to have some "create a website with webs.com" link on every page of your site); whereas with x10Hosting I feel I have a lot more control over my site, and I don't have ads or "put this on your site or this will happen" scenarios to deal with.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!
Blake

I would create a subdomain for her. You can more easily help her with her account and I don't think she'll be using a lot of space or bandwidth

Yes, only one person can log into cPanel. However, you could create an addon domain for your sister (mysister.co.cc), and create an administration panel out of PHP. This would not be against the TOS. Anyway, you don't have to worry because if she does not have any web designing experience, she would not want to log into cPanel anyway.

If you use the same IP, I don't think they could detect different people ;) But I didn't say anything..

Just remember that according to x10's Terms ;

Our service is not available to children under the age of 13, and we will not intentionally maintain information about anyone under the age of 13.

So if you are going to allow your sister to admin her own website, don't go announcing it on the forums & be discrete about her age when designing what you put into the site itself.

It would also be a good idea if you kept an eye on her activities with her site, to see that she was being responsible with it, & also that she wasn't putting herself to any online risks.

I don't know how strict x10 are with this policy (I've seen other people mention that they opened their accounts before they were 13) but it is something to bear in mind.

If you do, instead, do all the admin for her, I'd have thought it easiest overall to just create a sub, parked or add-on domain for her in your own account. She can always get her own account later & move the site when she gets older & if it gets too successful & needs more bandwidth. :)

Okay, first off - if I create an addon domain (by logging in to cPanel and clicking on Addon Domains in the Domains section, right), what will this look like? Say my site is example.co.cc - would it be addonDomain.example.co.cc (EDIT: No, wait, that's a subdomain...)?

I see on the CO.CC Web site that there is a "Getting a New Domain" link at the top; if I click on it, it looks like I can choose yet another xxx.co.cc domain; is this what I would want if my sister wanted her own xxx.co.cc site? (It would all still be under my x10Hosting account and my CO.CC account.)

How would adding an addon domain affect what my logging in to my x10Hosting account panel? Wouldn't only my example.co.cc site show up? If so, how do I change the addon domain to be xxx.co.cc if it doesn't show up separately?

Re zen-r: So, would it be against the TOS to have an addon domain for my sister on my account? Consider: I would create a simple PHP "admin" page for her, where she could just about edit ONLY her pages' content (stuff within a special content DIV within the body tag), and some color values that would globally style her site; she would never be able to upload/delete any files or ever be able to log in to my x10Hosting or cPanel account.

Re. the TOS : I'm not staff here, so can't answer that for definite.

My guess is that it would still be against the rules, strictly speaking, because she would still be creating content for the site. But I doubt that x10 would mind too much about the set-up you describe, as long as you keep a general eye on what she is doing with her pages.

As for the other questions, I'll let someone who has had more practice than me in trying out the extra domains features answer them. You could also use Search - lots of info has already been described in other threads.

Don't forget you can also Park another domain, at x10.
Names registered elsewhere, like .com or .co.cc can have their DNS set to point to x10, so that x10 can still host your website.

x10's nameservers are ns1.x10hosting.com & ns2.x10hosting.com.

Okay, so I'm a bit confused now - what's the difference between a parked, sub, and addon domain? Which one would I want to use for my sister?

Parked domain: DOMAINHERE.co.cc - It allows you to park the domain into your public_html folder.
Addon domain: DOMAINHERE.co.cc - Allows you to park the domain into a folder inside the public_html folder.
Subdomain: BLAH.DOMAINHERE.co.cc - which can be parked inside a folder inside the public_html folder.

So are addon and subdomains similar to each other? I don't see the difference between those two.

I'm sorry, but by "make a co.cc for your sister", do you mean that I should create a new CO.CC account for her or "add a new domain" to my own CO.CC account?

And, are you wanting me to create an addon domain or a parked domain?

Sorry, I just don't want to be screwing something up and maybe corrupting stuff on my own site(?).

add a new domain to your own co.cc account.. then set the nameservers to ns1.x10hosting.com and ns2.x10hosting.com Then click on addon domains in cpanel, type in the domain name, set a password, and click Submit..

Edit : Oops, I wrote this before zapzack's new post appeared! ;

I believe he means register a new .co.cc address, set the DNS to x10, & set it up in cPanel as an add-on domain.

There are other options.

Use Search here, & you should find more info on what the differences are. It is confusing though, & the info is scattered about a lot, so it may take you a bit of looking to find what you need to know. Eventually our new Knowledge Base will improve this. :)

Okay, I did everything zapzack told me to do; what do I do next to make mysissite.co.cc go to my new addon domain, the same way mysite.co.cc takes me to public_html?

Edit: Any ideas? I have no idea what to do, and my CO.CC domain will expire in a little more than 24 hours if I do not get it set up.
