mod rewrite - can't get it working

I am having trouble getting mod rewrite to work, and am wondering whether it is active at all.

My .htaccess file says:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule index/pageid/(.*)/ index.php?pageid=$1

but no matter what rules i try to test it, the URLs for my pages never change.

please can someone advise me?

Not sure if I get what the problem is.

I tried yourCuticleWebsite.co.uk/index/pageid/5/ and it worked.
