mod_rewrite help please? :D

Hi,
I'm kind of new to the .htaccess stuff and was wondering how to mod_rewrite my urls in this way:

Lets say im on the webpage URL: http://localhost/?index&catagory=6 (flowers category)
But I want to to be: http://localhost/flowers

Is this possible with .htaccess, and also the visitors should be able to enter http://localhost/flowers into thier browser.

That's not enough information. What determines the mapping between category numbers and names? Is that information stored in a database, a script or somewhere else?
