Recently my hard disk's sata power port got damaged, so it was replaced by Samsung.Unfortunately I lost data on it.So this is the list of my must have softwares I downloaded & installed as soon as I got new hard disk.

I can't help noticing a big hole in these lists -- a good backup/recovery/duplication utility. Acronis True Image Home has saved my butt on a number of occasions over the years. Save money anywhere else you want to, but do yourself the biggest favour ever and buy a good backup utility. (And no, the one that came with your OS -- you know, the one that put the backup on the same disk that just hard-crashed and is unrecoverable -- is not a "good backup utility".)

Clonezilla? No incrementals and an interface only a basement-dwelling IT geek could love (it looks just like your basic BIOS setup). If you've got the chops, fine, the UI isn't a killer, but the lack of incrementals is. Oh, and it doesn't do archives (backups as a single file -- spanned across limited-sized files or across disks if necessary), it does clones. That means you'll pay more in lost data than the thirty bucks you'll save (unless you have an unlimited budget for accumulating hard drives) because you can't, say, make your computer look exactly like it did two months ago, just long enough to copy off the project files you securely erased last month, then make it look like it did just before lunch again.

In other words, it's not nearly the same class of program as a really good backup utility. Pay for a good utility, and you will never, ever regret it.

I agree back up utilities are good only when you have two hard disks, otherwise single hard disk or dvds can't be reliable.I think online backup is best for sensitive files or projects.I am using dropbox and ubuntu one as backup utilities.Both utilities have the capability to sync files on the fly, as you create them.Dropbox offers you minimum 2 gb and you can increase it up to 8 gb.

Avast, although ms security essentials is getting glowing reviews so I might have to try it

Tracker Software's PDF-XChange / PDF Tools. awesome set of tools that completely replaces acrobat and the reader, even the free version, leaves foxit for dust.

That is all. I don't care for the browser wars. The price of petrol ('gas') is still rising, I've got more important things to concern myself with.

Most antivirus programs also create firewalls and other protection computer programs
