The main thing LibreOffice has going for it is that it is in fact forked from the Source Code of OpenOffice. People aren't happy about what Oracle has been doing with OpenOffice lately (mainly removing support for backwards compatibility libraries, amongst other things the last I checked), so they made their own version.
