I have a domain hosted elsewhere currently sitting with its name servers pointed at ns1 and ns2.

What I would like to do is have my url not just point to my www folder but actually also show up in the address bar all the time, ie:

http://dementedpants.com/pageexample.html instead of http://dementedpants.x10hosting.com/pageexample.html

I tried using an add-on domain setting to do it but that didn't seem to work. Am I missing something or is this just not possible with the free accounts?

Just to confirm it's ns1.x10hosting.com and ns2.x10hosting.com for nameservers.

It is possible because I'm doing the same as what you're wanting to do.

Then you need to use the add-on domain (which you say you've already done). If you've got the nameservers right and still unable to get it going then it's best to go to the official support area and open a ticket. Do allow a suitable time gap though - http://support.x10hosting.com/

Yes, that's what I have it set to. Doing a whois for my domain confirms that the dns changes have gone through.

Then you need to use the add-on domain (which you say you've already done). http://support.x10hosting.com/

Setting the add-on domain, per the knowledge base, to the following:

new domain name: dementedpants.com
subdomain/ftp username: dementedpants
document root: blank
password (the same thing twice)

Then, in "manage redirection," I have it so that dementedpants.com redirects to www/

If something about that is wrong, then let me know. Otherwise, I'll give it some time to work and then contact tech support.

As a side note, since it's probably relevant, I currently have my domain setup with the DNS forwarding, and then a HTTP redirect to dementedpants.x10hosting.com (mostly as a workaround to the fact that setting it as not-a-redirect points it to a placeholder for my domain registrar's hosting service).

Change "Redirects to" to
Not Redirected.

Then, change the document root to
/public_html
