In your code:
<div style="text-align: center; width: 1001px;">

put 'margin: 0px auto;'

Like so:

<div style="text-align: center; width: 1001px; margin: 0px auto;">

it's alright for a newb
made the banner smaller it's too inyou face
center it all and possibly have a back ground color rather than plain white or just a border round text would just break it up a bit better

It needs a better page layout.

You might get some useful tips from my tutorial at http://forums.x10hosting.com/tutorials/97286-beginners-guide-css-styling.html.

Ideally, you could do with a page container, within which you can put some bacground graphics.

I agree with the above - your header image is far too large.

I'd say its bland and a good start. I would suggest putting the links under your main banner at the top. Also, get a better banner design. If you need someone to spice up the top banner, let me know, I'll see what I can do for ya. Looks like you used MSpaint...
